INVESTIGATION: STONES OF FIRE

Stones of Fire is born from an in depth investigation process, which takes the word foundation and the limits of Mexico City as the inspiration for the creative process. In this case the foundation was the eruption of the Xitle volcano, which occurred approximately 1700 years ago. The lava that fell from it covered an área of 70 square kilometers, which nowadays is known as the “Pedregal”, named after the black rock that covers it. This rock has been descrived as “a sea of black lava” and it has a complex and interesting story. This story, as well as the role that the stones played within the city and its effect on the physical, social and cultural aspects is explored in the investigation. There is a special focus on Jardines del Pedregal, Ciudad Universitaria and Pedregal de Santo Domingo, as well as several “landmarks” that can be found within the rocky foundation, like the Anahuacalli Museum.
