BORN NATTURUNNAR
MOVIE PAVILION
(Children of Nature), 1991
Directed by the renowned Friðrik Þór Friðriksson, and notable in that it is the only Icelandic film to date to have been nominated for the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film, this film is the prime example of cinema in Iceland. The charming tale of love and growing old in the countryside takes on almost mythic status, and it raises questions about the value of life when people leave everything that has meaning behind.
The Movie Pavilion draws inspiration from this and other aspects of Friðriksson´s masterpiece, with its objective being to invite the visitor to leave everything behind and discover what lies within its walls. Such visitors will be welcomed by a mixed programme whose main attraction is a movie theater sorrounded by an exhibition on the history and importance of Icelandic film and television, but which also includes: a café, gathering areas and an outdoor movie “amphitheater”. Burried into the earth and in constant conversation with the natural landcape of northern Iceland, the pavilion is the ideal place to be immersed in the culture of cinema.
