EXPANSION OF THE ANAHUACALLI MUSEUM

In collaboration with: Andrea Manzur & Andrea Guzmán

The context is, without a doubt, the main focus of the project. After an in depth investigation about the history not only of the museum itself, but also the terrain in which it was built, it was evident that the importance that they have should be reflected on the expansion proposal. That was, in a way, the main goal of said proposal: respecting the context.

The main construction material is volcanic rock, the same that became a characteristic of the site after the eruption of the Xitle volcano. This selection was made in an attempt to disrupt the landscape in the least invasive way possible. The shapes of the volumes as well as the placement of these were designed to not touch the vegetation, as the project is located on a protected natural reserve. These volumes are supported by steel columns that are disguised with natural volcanic rock. This gives the illusion that the proyect is “floating” over the landscape. All of the buildings are connected through elevated outdoor passages that allow interaction with the amazing site.
